PART 7

PART 7

It showed Derek…

Standing beside a smiling blonde woman…

Holding the hand of a little girl who looked almost exactly Lily’s age.

The detective spoke quietly.

“Emma… we think your husband has been living a second life.”

The photograph shattered the last illusion I had about my marriage.

The smiling woman beside Derek looked happy—comfortable, like someone who had built a life with him. The little girl holding his hand had the same dark curls Lily had inherited, and for one impossible moment I wondered if I was looking at my daughter from another universe.

Detective Alvarez broke the silence.

“Her name is Claire Bennett. We believe she’s been living under a different surname in another county. Derek rented a second home eighteen months ago.”

I stared at the picture until my vision blurred.

“A second family?”

“We don’t know if they were legally married,” Alvarez replied carefully. “But we do know he transferred large amounts of money to accounts connected to her.”

Suddenly, so many pieces fell into place.

The missing paychecks.

The mysterious business trips.

The weekends he claimed were conferences.

He hadn’t been traveling for work.

He had been living another life.

Lily reached for my hand.

“Mommy?”

I smiled through tears.

“It’s okay, sweetheart.”

But it wasn’t.

Because if Derek wanted to start over, Lily and I were the only people standing between him and a fortune.

The insurance nobody knew about
The investigators spent the next two days digging through the burned remains of our house.

On the third morning, Detective Alvarez returned with another folder.

“This changes everything.”

She placed several papers on the table.

Three months earlier, Derek had secretly increased the homeowner’s insurance from $420,000 to $3.8 million.

He had also purchased a separate $2 million life insurance policy on me.

I felt physically sick.

“He needed me dead.”

Alvarez nodded slowly.

“The timing strongly suggests planning.”

The policy listed Derek as the sole beneficiary.

There was only one problem with his plan.

Lily had survived.

And children tell the truth in ways adults often cannot.

Claire’s decision
Police located Claire before they found Derek.

She arrived voluntarily at the sheriff’s office carrying a diaper bag and holding the hand of the little girl from the photograph.

Her daughter’s name was Ava.

She was five.

Claire looked exhausted, not glamorous. Dark circles framed her eyes, and the moment she saw me, she burst into tears.

“I didn’t know,” she whispered.

“You knew he was married.”

“I knew he said his marriage was over. He told me you refused to sign divorce papers because you wanted his money.”

Every lie Derek told one woman had been built upon another.

Claire opened her purse and removed a flash drive.

“I found this hidden in his office yesterday.”

Detective Alvarez immediately plugged it into a secure computer.
