ROME, GEORGIA — A major fire broke out Monday afternoon at the historic Floyd County Courthouse, severely damaging the iconic landmark built in 1892.According to initial reports, the blaze rapidly spread through the Romanesque Revival-style building, sending thick smoke into the sky and drawing a large emergency response. During the incident, the courthouse’s clock tower collapsed as flames tore through the structure.
Firefighters worked intensively to contain the fire, but the building suffered extensive structural damage. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and authorities have launched an investigation.
